States of

Matter
Mr G Langhans 2016

Matter is everything.
How can we classify it?
Putting stuff into categories based on its
properties to better understand what the
stuff is and how it behaves.
What properties can we use?

Sort this list into groups. It is up to you

to decide what criteria you use to sort
them.
A Marble
Air
A Brick
Milk

- A Spoon
- The Helium inside a
balloon

- Juice

Water
Carbon dioxide

Why did you group the things

you did together?
There is no wrong answer!

Heres how I grouped them

Marble, Brick and Spoon
Milk, Water and Juice
Air, Carbon dioxide and Helium
Why did I do this?

Solids, liquids and gases!

What do these terms mean?

Solids.
Hold their own shape
Often hard to change their shape
Incompressible (fixed volume)

Liquids.
Take the shape of the container they
are in (no fixed shape)
Easy to change shape
Incompressible (fixed volume)

Gases.
Take the shape of the container they
are in (no fixed shape)
Dont weigh very much
Compressible (variable volume)

Why is solid solid, why is liquid

liquid, why is gas gas?
All matter is made up of tiny particles!
How these particles are gives matter
its form.

How particles in solids, liquids

and gases behave.

Types of Matter Game.

Practical exercise.
In pairs, you need- 1 syringe
1 beaker
1 marble
Water
Air

We learned
Everything is made up of particles.
Solids- Particles locked together
Liquids - Particles bonded but can move
Gases - Particles free and move lots

If I heat water, what happens?

If I cool water vapour, what

happens?

If I cool water, what happens?
