WHAT IS CHARACTERISATION?
Characterisation refers to the methods an author uses to
reveal the character and personality of the people in a story.
The reader learns about the characters through what they say,
do and think, and what others say, do, and think about them.
When writers create the
personality of a character, they
choose their words very carefully.
The choice of adjectives, for
example, is very important.
The words the author uses to
describe a character help us to
picture what that character might
be like and how he or she is likely
to behave.
CHARACTERS OR CARICATURES?
Humans are not onedimensionally. They are not
fl at. Humans are complex and
forever changing.
You cannot predict what
anyone will do before they do
it. Individuals are vastly
diff erent from one another,
with diff erent points of views
and experiences.
People are not caricatures. So
then why are characters so
easy to predict? Why are
characters so onedimensionally and fl at?
