In 1450s Johannes Gutenberg first started
printing by printing GREEK NEW
TESTAMENT.
By 16th century printed books were widely
accessible & less costly
21st century students use PDF books, online
tutorial system & video lectures.

Soft Storage System


MAGNETIC TAPE
Invented in Germany in 1928.
Magnetizable coating on a long, narrow
strip of plastic film
Used as tape recording & video tape
recording
Made of an oxide of iron & chromium.
Sony , IBM, Fujifilm continue to
produce new magnetic tape drives.

FLOPPY DISC
Read & written by a Floppy Disk
Drive (FDD)
In 1960s it was 8-inch,later 5.5-inch,
mid 1990 3.5-inch.
Another names, floppy , diskette or
disk.
Earlier 80 KB,1990s 1.44 MB
Susceptible to dust, moisture & age.

CD ROM
Compact Disc Read Only Memory.
Popularly used from mid-1990s till date.
Introduced at a Japanese computer show in
1984.
Developed by Sony & Denon.
Had capacity of 540 M B, now has 650 M B.
Made from a 1.2 mm thick disc of
Polycarbonate plastic , with aluminum.
Common size is 120 mm diameter , mini
CD is 80 mm.

DVD
Digital Versatile/Video Disc.
Invented & co-developed by Sony ,
Philips , Toshiba &Panasonic in 1995.
Used to hold High Definition material
like Video & Audio.
Has the capacity of 4.7 G B (120min)
Standard DVD is 12 cm, Mini DVD is 8
cm.
