QUESTION 4
The top surface of a carbon steel plate 40 x 70 cm, and 2.5 cm
thick, is maintained at 250oC by blowing air at 25oC over it. The
convective heat transfer coefficient is 30 W/(m 2K). Thermal
conductivity k of the plate is 45 W/(mK).
a. Make a shell energy balance over it.
b. Find the rate of heat loss from the plate surface (Watt)
c. Find the temperature of the bottom surface (oC).
d. If the heat loss due to radiation from the plate is 340 W in
addition to the above convective heat loss, determine the
temperature of the bottom surface (oC).

GIVEN

L
W = 40 cm 0.4 m
x = 2.5 cm 0.025 m
Tair = 25oC
298 K
Ttop surface = 250oC 523 K
h = 30 W/m2.K
k = 45 W/m.K
Qrad
= 340 W

We know formulas for Q from Fouriers Law and Newtons

Cooling Law
Q = k A (
Q = k A = h A (T1 Ta)

b) Rate of Heat Loss from the

Plate Surface (Watt)
Q is constant at any instant

Q = k A = h A (Ta T0)
