Republic Records was conceived by brothers Avery and Monte Lipman as a hobby out of their kitchen table, putting out records as a grassroots operation. Their first successful record was by the Bloodhound Gang. In 1999, Republic Records was officially acquired by Universal Music Group, making it a fully owned subsidiary. From 2005 on, the Lipmans reshaped the company, signing emerging artists like Nelly, Lil Wayne, and Elton John, and partnering with smaller labels like Cash Money Records and No Limit Records, leading Republic Records to success.
