Historical Background
Established on 11 March 1891 as Imperial
Records Department in Calcutta [Kolkata]
Shifted to Delhi in 1911 as part of the Transfer of
Capital from Calcutta.
Main Building designed by Sir Edwin Luttyen
Completed in 1926
Shifting of Records completed in 1936
Started functioning in New Delhi in 1937
Name changed to National Archives of India in
1947

Main Functions:
Ensuring maintenance, arrangement and security of public records in the Archives and
in the Government offices;
Timely appraisal and weeding out of records of ephemeral value
Transfer of records of permanent value to the NAI
Advise and provide technical support to the State Governments, State Archives and
other archival Institutions for proper upkeep and management of their records

Hindi, Bangla, Sanskrit, Urdu, Tamil, Telugu,
etc.

Prominent among these are:

Abdul Qadeer Azad Collection, etc.
Over 2,400 Rare Manuscripts

searchable catalogue of records.

developed Trusted Digital Repository (TDR) for
preservation of e-records by incorporating ISO
standards for Open Archival Information System

life-cycle of records. It includes 4 software :
E-Rupantar,
Abhilekh Digitalaya,
Records Reporting System, and
E-Sangrahan.

Abhilekh Digitalaya: Government
Document Archival System and Repository
Records Reporting System: an online
reporting tool for various statutory
requirements by the government
departments.
E-Sangrahan: A software tool for
acquisition of records from various digital
repositories.

Provide usage and impact indicators through user, resources and

An initiative of NAI to make its rich treasure of Indian
Archival Records available to one and all at the click of a

14,781 users from 123 countries have visited the
website.
142,939 pages have been viewed on the website

The Abhilekh-Patal has been conceived in Four up-scalable modules,


viz.:

National Archives of India: Integrating all reference media of the NAI


Headquarters, and that of its Regional Office and Record Centres.

State Archives and other archival institutions in India: These will


include grantee institutions to whom financial assistance is given for
digitization of their archival collections, as well other dedicated portals
containing archival material (e.g. www.gandhiheritageportal.org; and
www.DrAmbedkarwritings.gov.in (proposed).
Archival Repositories Abroad: These will include archival repositories
(e.g. British Library, National Archives (UK), Bibliotheque Nationale (Paris),
National Archives and Records Administration (USA) etc.) that house
archival material of Indian interest.
Museums collections in India and Abroad: Artefacts and other
museum collection linking the archival collections (e.g. records of Tipu
Sultans struggle with the British in the NAI and Tipus Tiger (a
mechanical toy depicting a tiger devouring a British soldier) in the Victoria
and Albert Museum, London).
