SHAKESPEARE

MACBETH

Doctor : A great perturbation in nature, to receive at once

the benefit of sleep, and do the effects of
watching! In this slumbery agitation, besides her
walking and other actual performances, what, at any
time, have you heard her say?

Gentlewoman : That, sir, which I will not report after her.

Doctor : You may to me: and 'tis most meet you should.

Gentlewoman : Neither to you nor any one; having no witness to

confirm my speech.

Enter LADY MACBETH, with a taper

Lo you, here she comes! This is her very guise;
and, upon my life, fast asleep. Observe her; stand close.

Doctor :How came she by that light?

Gentlewoman : Why, it stood by her: she has light by her

continually; 'tis her command.

Doctor : You see, her eyes are open.

Gentlewoman : Ay, but their sense is shut.

This is the part where Macbeth already went to war and Lady Macbeth
is left on her own.

The Doctor admires her ability to sleep and being able to watch at the
same time.

The Gentle- Woman refuses to repeat what she heard Lady Macbeth say.

Why is that?
-Fear of being murdered
having no witness to
confirm my speech.
- she doesnt want to talk badly of the Queen

In this part Lady Macbeths title is saving her from being accused for
murder but as we can see later in the play her consience is giving her
away (Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much
blood in him.)

What is the meaning of light?

Lady Macbeth presents herself as strong and confident in her

deeds in front of Macbeth just so he cold do the murder.

She is actually very frightened of what they have done

- Duncan looks like her father
- she is scared of the outcome ( she never heard the witches
prophecies)
- her conscience is destroying her
Therefore she needs light. All these facts would only be
enlarged in the darkness and she would have to face her fears
and actually think about the circumastances of what she and
Macbeth have done.

Doctor : You see, her eyes are open.

Gentlewoman : Ay, but their sense is shut.

Two meanings :
1.) She is sleepwalking
2.) Description of her personality:
- she had a normal life in which a lot of people would be
perfectly happy but she always wanted more. She couldnt
*see* the limit of what was enough for her to be happy
because her sense is shut.
