Analog Sound recording and

Reproduction

Microphone: converts sound to electrical

Preamplifiers : amplify signal to improve
Signal to noise ratio
Equalizers: do frequency equalization
depending upon the media
Amplifier: amplifies the signal to be given to
analog recorder
Analog recorder: can use media like vinyl disc
or magnetic tape
vinyl disc: sound recorded in form of wavy
groove
Magnetic tape: sound recorded in form of flux

Stylus tracks the wavy groove on the

vinyl disc and vibrations of stylus
converted to electrical signals
magnetic flux variations on the tape
converted to electrical signals
Preamplifier: amplifies the weak signal,
enhances SNR
Equalizer: compensates for recording
characteristics of the media
Speaker: converts electrical to sound

DIGITAL SOUND RECORDING

AND REPRODUCTION

Microphone: sound to electrical

Preamplifier: improves SNR and gain
Amplifier: amplifies
Anti aliasing Filter: band limits the signal
A/D converter: digitizes the signal
Coder: adds error correction, control and
synchronization bits
Recorder assembly:
compact disc: optical recording in form of pits
and flat
magnetic tape: data in form of flux

Recorded assembly:
laser beam used to read pits and flats on compact
disc
magnetic flux read on magnetic tape
Preamplifier: amplifies weak signal, increases SNR
Decoder: error correction, control of servos and
clocking of various circuits
D/A converter: obtains analog signal
Reconstruction filter: smoothens the signal
Amplifier: amplifies
Speaker: electrical to sound

Advantages of digital sound

recording

Noise interference reduced

No equalization required
Errors corrected automatically
Better sound quality
Sound editing easier
Long durability

Disadvantages of digital sound

recording
Complex
Some info lost during A/D & D/A
conversions
High data rates involved
Cost high
