Monroe in 1817 was elected president of the
United States and was re-elected in 1820. During
these two terms, negotiated with Spain the
territory of Florida.
In 1820 he signed the Missouri Compromise. In
this document, the intention was to resolve the
constitutional dispute between slaveholders and
abolitionists. Monroe was emerged victorious in
the negotiations.
