NIIT Case Study Problems

and Solutions

Prateek Jain

Problems
Limited budget in
hand

Client wants to
roll out the
project in next 30
days

Time required to
implement all the
changes requires
45 man working
days. So time is
also a constraint

Major
Problems
Balance amount
left is $40000 but
changes will
require $ 60000
i.e. additional
$20000

Client not ready

to pay any extra
money for the
changes

Project is under
UAT so realigning
again the
development
team and
planning will take
some extra
efforts.

Solutions:- Option 1

Solution with Assumptions:

Let currentworkinghours = 8hours/day/person
Totalfor 25 people/ day= 25x8 = 200 hours/day
Total for 25 people for 30 day = 200x30= 6000
hours (if all 30 days are utilized)
Overtime amount/ hour for in house team= $20
Overtimeamount/hour forcontactors= $8
Total for45 people for 30 days ( for 8 hours a
day)= 45x8x30= 10800 hours
Now,extra hours required for newchanges=
45x8x30- 25x8x30 = 10800- 6000= 4800 hours
Budget/person( for 8 hours working)= $1334
I think if we apply this calculation
we can try to cover the project
and deliver the project
successfully to the client.

Solutions:- Option 2
Pull out people from Gurgaon office so that team becomes of 25
members.
Increase daily work hours by 1-2 hours so that it is 25-50 more hours
per day which is almost equal to 3-6 men days. This means you have
now effectively 30 resources , earlier you had 25 resources.
Work has increased by 50% (from 30 men days it has increased to 45
men days) so in this way you have increased the team efficiency by
50% and you can try to complete the project on time.
In terms of budget, since it is a 2 year project and this is ending of 1 st
year it can be adjusted in the 2nd year (2nd phase).

Risks Associated and Mitigation Plans

Budget issue in the 2nd year. If company doesnt allow an increase to
compensate this 12 months extra work.
Work effected in Gurgaon office as you pulled their resources out.
Employees can go for some emergency leaves which can effect the
timeline and the project plan which you have prepared.
Communicate planning results to all project participants for
implementation.
Select and commit the resources required for specific risk mitigation
alternatives

Risks Associated and Mitigation Plans

Assess and prioritize mitigation alternatives.

Identify alternative mitigation strategies, methods, and tools for each

major risk.
Characterize the root causes of risks that have been identified and
quantified in earlier phases of the risk management process.
