PULSE RATE

WHAT WE WILL LEARN

ABOUT
Pulse rate
Breathing
Circulatory system
Diet

WHAT IS A PULSE?
Yourpulseis therateat which your heart beats.
The number of times your heart beats each minute
is measured in beats per minute (bpm).

The rhythm and strength of the heartbeat can be

felt.

Average pulse rate is 70 beats per minute.

EXPERIMENT

Find your pulse.

After finding your pulse, count the number of
beats for 20 seconds.

Multiply this by 3 to find your pulse rate.

Record your result.
Then jog on the spot for 1 minute.
Take your pulse again.
Record your result and compare.

WHY DOES ARE PULSE

RATE
INCREASE?
Our pulse rate increases as our muscles need
more oxygen.

This is because we need energy to exercise.

We get this oxygen from the air we breath in.

BREATHING
When we breath in [inhale], our lungs fill up
with air, that contains oxygen.

This happens because of our diaphragm

The oxygen is then transported to our muscles
We then breath out [exhale] carbon dioxide

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
The heart is like a pump that pumps blood all
around the body

This is how blood moves around our body

using veins, arteries and capillaries

Blood is made up of white blood cells, red

blood cells and platelets

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
White blood cells fight diseases.
Red bloods cells transport things like oxygen
all over our body

Platelets clot the blood to heal cuts

HOW DIET CAN HELP

PULSE RATE
Food provides us with energy
Different foods gives us different amounts of
energy

A balanced diet consists of the correct

amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, fats,
vitamins, minerals and water

A healthy diet can protect the human body
