INTRODUCTION
hcshhsdhs

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a medicinal plant extensively

used in Ayurveda and household remedy for various
diseases
Curcumin is one of active components in turmeric
Curcumin is the phyto-chemical that gives a yellow
colour to turmeric and responsible for most of the
therapeutic effects including antimicrobial and
wound healing activity
Poor thermal stability of curcumin restricts to
remain in few number of therapeutic applications
Pure curcumin was extracted by using silica gel
column chromatography

Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs) are the most well-known

anionic clays and derived from the structure of mineral
brucite
LDH consists of a hexagonal close packing of hydroxyl ions
in which alternate layers of octahedral sites are occupied by
Mg2+ and Al3+ ions

The solubility of LDHs is highly

pH-dependent

application as anion adsorbents, medicinal
stabilizers, ion exchangers, catalyst,

HOST-GUESTCHEMISTRY

Host-guest
chemistrydescribescomplexesthat
are
composed of two or moremoleculesorionsthat are held
together in unique structural relationships by forces other
than those of fullcovalent bonds
Intercalation reaction between the host (LDH)
and guest (Curcumin) compounds provide the
opportunity to develop various hybrid compounds
for pharmaceutical use
A huge variety of anions can be incorporated into
the interlayer region of these hosts using a range of
methods
Co-precipitation method is one of the methods
commonly used for preparation of
LDH intercalated
materials

Interlayer of LDH consists of NO3- ions and water

molecules.
In LDH-curcumin nano-composite, the interlayer spacing
consists of NO3- ions, water molecules and curcumin
Therefore, curcumin-LDH consists of much lower water
content compared to pure LDH because the curcumin
molecules replace water molecules and curcumin
molecule accommodates at a larger spacing compared to
water molecule

KINETIC STUDY OF THE UVRELEASE OF LDHCURCUMIN

hcshhsdhs
The Zero order drug releasing equation of
curcumin at pH 2 is

Where:
Q0 = Initial amount of drug
Qt = Amount of drug release at time t
K0 = Zero order release constant
t = Time in hours
Rearranging of the above equation into:
Qt / Q0 = 1 + K0 t / Q0
Therefore,

A0: Initial absorbance of drug

At: Absorbance of drug release at timet

CONCLUSION
hcshhsdhs

PXRD, FT-IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, SEM and TGA

results
confirm
that
the
curcumin
was
successfully intercalated to LDH
Curcumin exhibits keto-enol tautomerization at
higher pHs, as a result overall charge of curcumin
becomes negative and the hydrophilic nature of
OH allows to strong interactions with LDH
At lower pHs, curcumin intercalated LDH releases
the curcumin more linearly due to the
destabilization of interactions between LDH and
curcumin
The kinetic study suggests the use of curcumin
intercalated LDH at low pH hence this concept
can be incorporate into a drug carrier or wound
dresser in plaster industry
