ISOMETRIC PROCESS
(ISOCHORIC PROCESS)

Manner of changing the state or thermal

condition of fluid at constant volume. It could
be internally reversible or internally
irreversible process.

Example:

A scuba tank contains 1.5 kg of air. The air in

the tank is initially at 15 C. The tank is left
near an engine exhaust line, and the tanks
pressure doubles. Determine
a) The final temperature
b) The change in internal energy
c) the heat added

ISOBARIC PROCESS

Is an internally reversible change of state

without changing the pressure during the
process.

Example:

Consider that 1 kg of air has a 21.7 kJ

decrease of internal energy while its
temperature is reduced to one third of the
initial temperature during a reversible nonflow constant pressure process. Determine
a) The initial and final temperature
b) Q
c) W
d) S

ISOTHERMAL PROCESS

Is an internally reversible change of state of

the system or substance without changing
the temperature.

Example:

The gain in entropy during an isothermal

nonflow process of 5lb of air at 60F is 0.642
Btu/R. What is
a) The ratio V2/V1
b) The ratio P2/P1
c) W
d) Q

ISENTROPIC PROCESS

Is an adiabatic and internally reversible

process or a constant entropy change of
state.

POLYTROPIC PROCESS

Is an internally reversible process in

accordance with pVn = C, where n is any
constant other than 1, 0, , and k.
