Methodology

This project is to design and fabricate a mini planetary ball mill that can
grind the solid state of raw materials into a fine powder.
Planetary ball mill are widely for use for laboratory that has standard for
the widest range of applications. The principle of the planetary ball mills
for the material to be ground takes place primarily through the highenergy impact of grinding balls. To achieve this, the grinding bowl,
containing the material to be ground and grinding balls, rotates around its
own axis on a main disk whilst rotating rapidly in the opposite direction.
At a certain speed, with this configuration, the centrifugal force causes
the ground sample material and grinding balls to separate from the inner
wall of the grinding bowl. The grinding balls then cross the bowl at high
speed and further grind the sample material by impact against the
opposite bowl wall. In addition impact between the balls themselves on
the sample material adds to the size reduction process.

Conclusion
To make a fine grinded material manually will be consumed a lot energy
and inconvenience. Furthermore, it also cost a lot time with a very low
production rate due human limitation. So, in this project we will design a
planetary ball mill with a low cost and good quality performance.
Objective
In our projects, there are three main objectives needed to be achieved in
order for this project to be success.
I. To design a planetary ball mill with a low production
cost.
II. To build a planetary ball mill with a long working time capability.
III. To determine the relationship between RPM, time needed and
fineness of powder.
Scope
The scope of the project is including a design and fabrication a smallscale planetary ball mill machine at a lower cost. The planetary ball mill
machine should be a small-scale size at a lower cost with good quality
performance and should be able to perform continuously with a long
period working time capability .

All the design is fabricated and assembled. The planetary gear is

the main component of the machine to get the planetary motion so
the grinding process can occur which deliver a centrifugal force to
the ball inside the jar.

Design and fabrication

For our objectives, we are able to achieve the objective which is to fabricate
a mini ball mill that can grind steel specimen into powder form. From our
test, we were able to gain some product but the product not powder
enough to achieve micron size particle after two hours of grinding. From
that result we can see that there are measures that we overlooked and we
will improve it and continue with the next trial to achieve our last objective
which is determining relationship between RPM, time needed and fineness
of powder.

Experiment Setup
The present study aims to associate the time taken for the ball mill to
grind the materials into meter particles with the optimum speed of the ball
mill jar. The ball mill should operate at a constant and optimum speed
which is in the range of 300 rpm to 500 rpm. Alternatively, the application
of forces on the particles in different size of grinding media balls causes
the breakages of the particles into particles. Based on the energy
consumption theory for the grinding limit, the time-dependent form for
product size (distribution) at fine grinding stage is also considered..
