Track & Trace Business

Background
Tracking means monitoring forward
movement of finished goods through the
supply chain and ensuring that all taxes and
duties have been paid and volumes verified.
Tracing means working backwards
through the supply chain to establish where
any genuine product was diverted out of
the legitimate supply chain.

Using the example of

the pharma industry
Up to 15 percent of all medicinal products
in the world are counterfeit (WHO)
Drugs often lack essential active
ingredients, or contain dangerous contents,
which can result in treatment failure or
even death
The global sale of counterfeit drugs will
reach $75 billion in 2010 a 92 percent
increase in five years
As a result:
Pharmaceutical companies are working in
conjunction with standards organizations to
develop a system for tracking and tracing

Another example
Software

copyright

2010 Q Data USA, Inc. All rights

Software Part 2
The rate of global software piracy climbed
from 41 percent in 2008 to 43 percent in
2009
In 2009, for every $100 worth of legitimate
software sold, an additional $75 worth of
unlicensed software made its way onto the
market
In 2009, the worldwide value of unlicensed
software hit $51.4 billion
As a result:
This highlights the need for governments,
law enforcement and industry to work
together to address this vital economic

The Current State of

Standards
Global standards for track and trace vary
enormously
In the U.S., multiple states have enacted epedigree regulations requiring serialization
(which is the process of marking individual
items with a unique identifying code by
applying an RFID tag or printed barcode
directly to the product so it can be traced
through the supply chain)
In Europe, a number of countries also are
demanding varying types of serialization
solutions

December 2009, all pharmaceutical industry

products distributed in Turkey were mandated to
have the ECC200 Data Matrix barcode made up of

Key Elements of Track

and Trace
An effective track and trace solution
requires implementing three levels of
functionality

Print and verify

Serialization
Track and Trace

With this functionality, manufacturers can

systematically print and verify marking
numbers on all products (lot number, check
digit, product classification, etc.), mark
each product with a unique serial number,
and create a central database of this
information. The central database allows
manufacturers to track and store

The Challenges of
Serialization
Implementing global standards such as
EPCIS standards will present a number of
challenges for manufacturers, especially
when it comes to serialization:

Guaranteeing the uniqueness of serial data

Implementing a process and securing the proper
equipment to efficiently apply and read barcodes
Overcoming physical product limitations that may
make it difficult to label products
Printing and verification in the high-speed
manufacturing environment.

Architectural Overview
Important Note:
the Movilizer for Track & Trace can
connect to SAP AII (via PML) as well
as to SAP OER (via EPCIS). The
conversion in the corresponding
standard is done on the Movilizer

FUNCTIONAL OVERVIEW
(I)
1. Authenticating Product IDs
(enabling any internal or external persons to
authenticate Product IDs)

2. Capturing Logistics Events

(across the internal and external supply chain)
For example:
shipping / receiving / packing / unpacking

3. Handling exception events

For example: decommissioning

FUNCTIONAL OVERVIEW
(II)
4. Label Generation
Enabling any label to be printed out of the Movilizer Cloud
(For re-labelling / or re-packaging processes)
Requires not footprint deployed locally other than a local
printer. Over 2000 printer types supported with out of the box
drivers.

5. Device Remote Control

Enable any device to be controlled and monitored
remotely via device management functionalities.

AUTHENTICATING
Product IDs (I)
1. Authenticating Product Ids
(enabling any internal or external persons to
authenticate Product IDs) .
Some important considerations:
A) Normally sales persons, inspectors or even final
customers use this functionality, and not only
internal company employees.
B) Those users are usually not connected to the
company private network but need to get Product
ID Information from the outside
C) Those users frequently use mobile phones with
camera to scan the barcode label on the product
and start a query (rather than special ruggedised
scanners)

Authenticating Product
IDs (II)

CAPTURING EVENTS (I)

2. Capturing Logistics Events
(across the internal and external supply chain)
For example:
shipping / receiving / packing / unpacking
A) Normally warehouse operators or supply chain
partners use this functionality, mainly internal or semiinternal employees.
B) Those users are usually connected to the company
private network by different means, but in some
ocassions (e.g. Delivery drivers) are on the road
without a proper connection. So the application should
support offline / online operations (although in
warehouses normally WiFi connection is available)
C) Those users frequently use ruggedised mobile
devices optimised for scanning purposes due to the
high volumes of scanning required
copyright

2010 Q Data USA, Inc. All rights

CAPTURING EVENTS (II)

A very fundamental requirement of capturing events is sometimg the speed. In high volume
Scenarios a single warehouse operator can scan as much as 12,000 IDs in a single shift, which
means that scanning performance is crucial! For this reason, the Movilizer for Track & Trace offers
two options for event capturing:

For low volume

scanning scenarios

For high volume

scanning scenarios

Movilitas spent over 1 month of work

optimising this screen for high speed
capturing, which includes features
like:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

ID Buffering to allow high data

Background data saving
Sound for scanning (different
sound if ID exists or not)
Fine tuned scanning
performance (in miliseconds
possible)
Average 2,000 ID pro delivery no
problem
Automatic filtering and various
validations possible
Etc.

HANDLING EXCEPTIONAL
EVENTS (I)
3. HANDLING EXCEPTIONAL EVENTS
For example: decommissioning
Some important considerrations:
A) Destruction of Ids, Returns, sampling, quality
inspection events etc. are typical exceptional
events. Any agent involved in the supply chain
may have the requirement to capture exceptional
events (internal or external employees).
B) Users are usually connected to the company
private network but not always (external users not
connected). Some users may use special device
scanners (for high speed scanning) some thers
may use normal mobile phones in exceptional
situations

EVENTS (II)

Label Generation (I)

4. Label Generation
(For re-labelling / or re-packaging processes)
Some important considerations:
A) Enabling any label to be printed out of the
Movilizer Cloud. So customers do not require any
additional new infrastructure in their landscape.
B) Requires no footprint deplyoed locally other
than a local printer connected to any standard PC
with occasionally connection to the internet. Label
generation works offline as well.
C) Over 2000 printer types supported with out of
the box drivers.
D) Flexible label and forms designer allows
customer to easily define printing layouts centrally.
E) Optimised label generation forms for the end
users, so that data entry is minimised.,

Remote Device Control

(I)
5. Device Remote Control
Movilitas offers device management capability (third
party integrated software out of the Movilizer
cloud ) . It enables any device to be controlled and
monitored remotely via device management
functionalities. Whenever internal employees using
corporate devices a mobile device management tool
is mainly required for:
A) Remote control for helpdesk (troubleshooting)
B) Preventive control of hardware resources
(storage capacitiy, timestamps etc.)
C) Security: killing the device in the event of lost or
death etc.
