POLITICAL LUXEMBOURG
Its a parliamentary democracy headed by a
constitutional monarch.
Prime Minister of Luxembourg is seen as the head of
the government.
Has a multi- party system.
Executive power falls to the Grand Duke and the
council of Government (cabinet) under the constitution
of 1868.
The Cabinet consists of a Prime minister and several
other ministers.
Prime minister either is a leader of a political party or
coalition of parties, having the most seats in
parliament.
Legislative power is exercised by both the government
and the parliament.
LUXEMBOURG IN THE EU
Luxembourg was one of the original 6 member
countries who formed the European Coal & Steel
community in 1951.
Luxembourg have 6 members in the European
Parliament.
Luxembourg has held presidency of the Council of
the EU 12 times between 1960-2015.
Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European
Commission is from Luxembourg.
Luxembourg is considered to be the Embassy of
the EU.

LANGUAGE
There are three official languages in Luxembourg, French,
German and of course Luxembourgish.
More than 5000 words of Luxembourgish are of French
origin.
Luxembourgish is considered to be the national language
of the Grand Duchy, it is the mother tongue or
language of the heart for most Luxembourgers.
Although Luxembourgish is the most spoken of the three
official languages, French is the most popular for written
purposes.
English is compulsory in schooling and most of the
population of Luxembourg can speak English.
RELIGION
Since 1980 it has been made illegal for the
government to collect statistics on religious
beliefs or practises.
An estimation was made in 2000, that 87% of
Luxembourgers were Catholics, the remaining
13% was made up of Protestants, Jews,
Orthodox Christians, Muslims and those of other
or no religion.
In 2005 44% of Luxembourgers responded that
they believe that there is a God(s), 28%
there is some sort of spirit or life force and
22% they do not believe in a God, spirit or life
force of any kind according to the
Eurobarometer poll.
