LNA DESIGN FOR

FM RADIO
GUIDE : DR. PRASHANTHA KUMAR H
SUHAS S
16CE24F
M.TECH 1ST YEAR

Objectives

LNA design for FM radio applications.

To test the design using the local public FM radio stations.

To enhance the design for better selectivity and sensitivity.

Specifications

A typical gain of about 20 dB

Noise Figure of utmost 2 dB

An input impedance of 50 .

An operating bandwidth between 88 MHz to 108 MHz

Schematic

Simulation Results

5
The input reflection co-efficient
is very low near the frequencies
of interest.
In such a scenario, an input
matching network can be
avoided, provided the values of
remain within the tolerance
limits.
The high values of S11 at higher
frequencies are not much of a
concern since they are filtered
beforehand.

Simulation Results

The input and output reflection

coefficients are less than -15 dB
near the frequencies of interest.

This is an indicator of a good match

at the source as well as the load
end of the amplifier.

Simulation Results

7
The forward transmission gain
or S21 is greater than 20 dB at
the corner frequencies.
The gain rolls off quite steeply
to reach a little over 0 dB for
the third order harmonic (300
MHz).
This satisfies our requirement
for selectivity as well as
required gain.

Simulation Results

The noise figure is well below

the threshold of 2 dB.

At the mid-point of the band i.e

100 MHz, NF is about 0.88 dB.

Inference

The amplifier has a very good gain of 22 dB and negligible

reflection coefficients of -15 dB within the band of operation.

The NF is about 0.9 dB, well below the specified 2 dB

The input impedance is almost 50 in the absence of a matching

network. However, it can be matched if greater efficiency is
necessary.

The bandwidth is as per specification as verified by the results.

ROAD AHEAD

Hardware implementation.

Fabrication followed by testing and performance evaluation.
