Analog vs Digital Signals

CS 391

Types of Signals
There are 2 types of signals that carry informationAnalog
Digital

Analog Signals
is any continuous signal for which the time varying
feature (variable) of the signal is a representation of
some other time varying quantity
Uses continuous range of values to represent
information
Example- human voices

Analog Signal uses

Best suited for audio and video transmission
Applications: Thermometers, audio tapes, land line
telephones

Digital Signal
Digital signals are discrete time signals generated by
digital modulation.
Uses discrete or discontinuous values to represent
information
Use Binary values (zero or one) to send and receive data
between computers
Examples- CDs

Digital Signals uses

Best suited for Computing and digital electronics
Applications- PCs and Mobile Phones

Sine Wave

Square Wave

Summary
Analog
Infinite range of values
Continuous
More exact values- more difficult to work

Digital
Finite range of values
Discrete
Less accurate- easier to work with

Analog vs Digital?
Analog Low cost
Portable
Infinite amount of data

Digital
faster rate of transmission
More reliable
Less errors
