Routing
Process of moving a data from source to

destination is routing
Usually performed by dedicated device

called router
Routing solves the problem of how to

find paths between source and

destination in the network

Conti
Switches and routers in the

network would make

independent decisions about
were to send traffic
Due to this we get a path
that make outer loop and the
packet will follow infinite loop

Conti
To avoid this we use different protocols

i.e

- Spanning tree protocol (STP)

- Link state protocol
Open Shortest Path First
(OPSF)
TRILL

Spanning Tree Protocol

STP was first designe by Radia

Perlmnan in 1980
STP is a network protocol that
ensures a loop free topology in a
simple network
It disable those links that are not
the part of the spanning tree,
leaving a single active path
between any two network nodes

Link-State Protocol
TRILL
TRILL is a link protocol
between switches
Every switch learn the
topology of the network,
how to reach other switch
and how to do routing

Working

Open Shortest Path First

It is also link protocol but it work on

layer 3
It route on Ip addresses
It has been use in ISP network
Disadvantage
As it route on layer 3 so we need

more configuration. We have to

assigned Ip addresses, subnate etc
