Water resources on Earth are abundant but not easily accessible. While about 70% of the planet is covered in water, only 3% is freshwater for human use. Most freshwater comes from surface runoff and groundwater in a hydrological cycle. However, water scarcity is a growing problem, affecting over 2.8 billion people at least monthly. It is caused by factors like population growth, unequal access, and overexploitation of water for agriculture. To ensure future water and food security, conservation and management practices are needed.

A BLUE PLANET From outer space earth looks blue in color due to the abundant presence of water. Approximately 70% of
WATER WATER EVERYWHERE AND NOT A DROP TO DRINK About three fourth of the earths surface is
covered with water but only a small portion
accounts for use. This freshwater is mainly obtained from surface runoff and ground water that is continually being recharged and renewed through a hydrological cycle. Now the reason why we are not able to satisfy our needs though there is plenty of water available is that only 2.5% of the total percentage of water available is fresh water
WATER SCARCITY
Water scarcityis the lack of sufficient
availablewaterresources to meet the demands ofwaterusage within a region. It already affects every continent and around 2.8 billion people around the world at least one month out of every year. More than 1.2 billion people lack access to clean drinkingwater. The abundance and renewability of water is difficult to manage that it may lead to water scarcity.
Water shortage is generally
associated with regions having low rainfall or those that are drought prone. The availability of water resources varies over space and time mainly due to variations in seasonal and annual precipitation but water scarcity is often caused by over exploitation, excessive use and unequal access to water among different social groups.
Need for Water
Conservation and Management
Water scarcity maybe an outcome of
large and growing population and consequent greater demands for water and unequal access to it. To facilitate more food production water resources are over-exploited to expand irrigated areas and dry season agriculture which leads to falling groundwater levels and therefore adversely affecting water availability and food security of the people .
FACTS AND FIGURES
India receives nearly 4 per cent of the global precipitation and ranks 133 in the world in terms of water availability per person per annum. The total renewable water resources of India are estimated at 1,897 sq km per annum. By 2025, it is predicted that large parts of India will join countries or regions having absolute water scarcity. According to Falkenmark , Swedish expert , water stress occurs when water availability is between 1,000 and 1,600 cubic metre per person per year
