Pre-Production
The research and planning process for pre-production
Research was vital, we explored the thriller genre immensely by

This piece of research helped us identify thriller
conventions, this included mis-en-scene, characters,
sound and narrative.
We watched many previews and trailers to give us a
Creativity sense of what has already been done. The purpose of
this was to make sure our work is original so we don’t
copy or repeat ideas. The trailers also helped us with
our own ideas we started to come up with narratives
and characters we would like to include. The work we
did in pre-production enabled us to be creative with our
vision for the opening sequence.

Before planning the production we carried out a

The similar texts we looked at increased our

Production
During planning of the production we were
asked to create a daily filming sheet., where we
had to log information about what was filmed in
each session.

This helped us organise ourselves and save
time as we knew exactly what we had to do in
the allocated time frame.
We designed conventional titles that we thought
would suit our opening sequence and genre. We
created various fonts for our titles in fireworks
and word, Here are a few of our ideas…

We filmed our footage with Panasonic DV
Cameras; the tripod aided us with still
shots. We were able to zoom in and out
of specific areas. The camera was complicated
to use but enabled a clear picture good quality
footage to be filmed.
Throughout the production process we kept
referring to various texts to make sure we stuck
to the brief. We made sure the content of the
footage related to the narrative structure. We
analysed texts we went through, we found out
that the use of close ups was vital.
In the production we decided to refill some
sections we thought were unconventional. The
lighting in some of the footage we filmed was
too light so we re filmed at a later time. This
decision allowed us to portray the pathetic
fallacy where the weather matches the
atmosphere/mood.
Post-Production
After filming the main production we had to
create music and sound for our opening
sequence. In order for the sound to be effective
we researched different types of thriller music.

this really helped us identify specific
conventions of music in the thriller genre to input
into our own creations.
We had to create the music ourselves, we did
this in garage band. The programme allowed us
to create sounds and edit ready made music.
We edited a sample and input sounds that were
suitable to genre and narrative. The music we
created also appeals to the audience as well as
conveying the conventions.
During post production we edited all of our
footage in imovie, we had to re-film a few times
as some shots were either to dark or out of
frame. We had little time to re film but it was
vital we made changes to improve our grade.
Whilst editing we had a look at other opening
sequences to give us an idea on the
conventions. We realised that we needed
quicker cuts to increase the pace and tension of
the opening sequence. The similar texts helped
us with the evaluation, we were able to compare
thriller conventions with our production.
In post production we had to evaluate the whole
process, we discussed all the decisions we
made in pre production, production and post-
production.
