Clothing over the ages

Historical Significance

INTRODUCTION
In our trip to Victoria we looked at Climate change, Haida, clothing
over the ages between the 1930s -1939, and causes and consequences

ANCIENT ARTEFACTS #1
Name: Sea Lion Headress
(1884)
This Sea Lion Headress is
created by Captain N.H. The
Sea Lion Headress is an
apparel used by the Haida
drummer during ceremonial
dances and potlatches. It is
made of carved yellow cedar
and birch wood. It is
supposedly made of sea lion
skin and whiskers. The Haida
group believe that sea lions
resemble abundance in
wealth and power, as well
as, good hunting skills.

ARTEFACT #2
Name: Copper, Beaver Crest
(1911)
The creator of this Haida
emblem is Chief Skedans. To
the Haida, the Beaver is a
hard worker at mind, body and
soul, and symbolizes
creativity, creation,
cooperation, persistence and
harmony. This Beaver crest
comes from a Haida legend
about a hunter and his wife,
who becomes the beaver. In
the legend, the wife says,
"Don't be sad! It is I, your
wife, and your two children.
We have returned to our home
in the water. Now that you

HAIDA WOOD CARVINGS

This basket is used to put spoons, and it is made of wood
pieces. The wood pieces can vary from birch to cedar.
This basket in the photo is made of red cedar pieces
woven together. The creator of this basket is a Native
Haida, who is anonymous.

CLOTHING OVER THE AGES

1930 1939

1930 - 1939
The Great Depression began in the late 1920s and it carried out
through the mid 1930s. Many men lost their jobs and were forced to
join relief camps, where their wages were even lower and the living
conditions were not good.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Climate Change
Climate change determines which species
liver where and whether they survive
Also known as Natural selection:
Mammoths could not adapt to the new
environment of Canada and went extinct.

Weather is affected by climate change

Difference in clouds
Affects sunlight which can harm the growth
of plants

For example, BC is on the border of

Canada, therefore if there is a hurricane, a
tsunami can hit BC, especially Victoria
Island and all the other islands around BC.

CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES

Small pox
First came in contact from the Europeans
Killed approx. 95% of first nations
Roughly only 800 Haida were left

Haida were a very violent group, and

when the Europeans introduced alcohol
to them, the Haida became very
troublesome, and many of them split up.
Haida also used to allow forced labor,
however after the Europeans infected
over %95 of their population, they
stopped forcing labor upon kids.
