MANDELA

He was the
first person
in his family
to go to
school.

Nelson Mandela
was a South
African activist
and in 1994 he
became the first
black president of
South Africa.
He was in prison for
almost 3 decades
because of trying to
overthrow the proapartheid government
which was a system of
racial segregation in
South Africa enforced
through legalisation by
the national party (the
governing party) from
1948 to 1994.

Nelson Mandelas
farther died of
lung disease when
he was 9 years old
and he was then
adopted by
Jongintaba
Dalindyebo.
He was born on
the 18th July 1918
and died on the 5th
December 2013 of
a lung illness.

He has a
species of
spider named
after him.

He became
famous for his
long fight
against racial
prejudice and
bad government.
He became a
hero to people
all over the
world.
He was respected
for his wisdom and
courage in bringing
people together to
live in peace.
