    What is Teflon?
    A frozen, compressed sample of tetrafluoroethylene was
    polymerized into polytetrafluoroethylene.
    Teflon can be described as one of the most slippery materials

    Whats the History of Teflon?


    The original teflon(PTFE) was first created on April 16, 1938
    FEP (Melt-processable) was made in 1960
    ETFE (available as powder or pellets and is more resistant) was
    made in 1970
    PFA (easier to process and available in different forms) 1972
    Teflon didnt have crazy changes b/c it was perfect for its purpose
    from the start!

    What Field of Engineering is it?


    This material is apart of the Chemical field of engineering due to
    the polymerizing of tetrafluoroethylene. (They have the resources
    to create it)
    Once again, it is a form of synthetic plastic, albeit a tough one.
    The science behind the making of polytetrafluoroethylene is that
    the monomers of it bonded together and created teflon!

    How has it Impacted Modern Day?


    Many materials are coated with Teflon such as:
    Cooking materials
    Bullets
    Wires
    Anything that needs water, heat, or chemical resistance
    It helps improve safety and makes items more user-friendly

    right is the most
    recent patent on
    Teflon.
    Mainly just a few
    tweaks
    No groundbreaking
    changes

    Could There Be Replacements/Upgrades?


    The most recent patent applied nanostructured zirconia or
    nanostructured titania to a metal substrate; and polishing the
    surface of the metal substrate.
    We would find a safer way to make Teflon due to the toxicity of one
    of the substances (Perfluorooctanoic Acid) to make the
    polytetrafluoroethylene.
