Week 9: Measures and Time

Warm Up:
Multiply and divide by 10, 100 and
1000
write 36 on your whiteboards. Create a dice
to show 10, 100, 1000 and 10, 100,
1000
Spin the dice and follow the instructions.
Repeat with other 2-digit numbers.

Write these in metres: 2km, 1.5km, 24km,

0.6km, 1.345km, 0.25km.
Distances on signs in the UK are shown in
miles whereas in Dubai we use kilometres.
A mile is longer than a kilometre. A good
approximate rule to convert from miles to
kilometres or vice versa is to remember that
5 miles is approximately 8 km.
So how many kilometres is the same as 10
miles? 15 miles? 50 miles?

Lets draw a table on the board to show

these facts.
We can find more distances very quickly if
we draw a line graph.
Im going to show you how to draw a graph
to help (axis labels etc.)
Lets plot the first couple of points and join
them.
How can we read off intermediate points?

Convert the distance from JESS to Burj

Al Arab into miles using your line
graph.

Using Google Maps and your conversion

graph, find the distance (km and miles)
between:
-JESS

Arabian and JESS Jumeirah

-JESS Arabian and Atlantis Hotel
-JESS Arabian and Mall of the Emirates
-Dubai Mall and Dubai Airport
-Maison Mathis and Westin Hotel
