Spring Week 2 & 3

Addition and Subtraction

WEEK BEGINNING: 8TH JANUARY 2017
& 15TH JANUARY 2017 (CAMP WEEK)

08.01.17
Catch up

Catch up from last week on negative numbers

09.01.17
WALT: Add and subtract near multiples of powers of
10 including decimals

Round numbers with 2 decimal places to the nearest whole

Play Dartboard rounding at

http://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?f=DartboardRoundingv2,
choosing nearest 1 from left menu. Click on the green section
one at time. Chn write answers on their w/bs.

Click on pink sections so that we can check our answers.

Repeat with a new grid.

09.01.17
WALT: Add and subtract near multiples of powers of
10 including decimals

4735

Add 203 and explain how you did this to a partner

Repeat this time subtracting 705.

How would you add and subtract 2003?

Add 200 and write the answer. Now use this answer to add 197 to
4735.

Sketch an empty number line (ENL) jotting to show the addition of

200 and a hop back of 3 as we have added 3 too many.

Repeat for subtracting 400, then subtracting 395.

09.01.17
WALT: Add and subtract near multiples of powers of
10 including decimals

5672

Add 2000 and then use this to add 1995

Explain how you did this

Repeat for subtracting 2000 and 1995.

09.01.17
WALT: Add and subtract near multiples of powers of
10 including decimals

Explain that we can also do this to add nearly numbers which are
decimals.

465 + 299 and 4.65 + 2.99

How might you work out each?

How might you work out 6.25 1.98?

Sketch an ENL to show the jumps

Repeat with 4.21 3.02

WALT: Use knowledge of the order of operations and
brackets to carry out calculations

4 + 3 12

Have a go at answering this question

Half of you will work out the calculation working from left to right
and the other half working from right to left.

Discuss the different outcomes.

11.01.17
WALT: Use knowledge of the order of operations and
brackets to carry out calculations

We have rules in maths: multiplication and division should be

done first in a calculation before addition and subtraction.

If we want the addition or subtraction to be done first we need to

add brackets, because brackets are always worked out before
anything else.

Rpt with 6 8 4

Rpt with 4 + 16 2

11.01.17
WALT: Use knowledge of the order of operations and
brackets to carry out calculations

12.01.16
Warm Up: Mental Arithmetic and SATS style questions

20 quick fire mental

arithmetic questions

12 SATs style
questions in 10
minutes (be sure to
read through the
questions carefully
and always show
your working)

15.01.17
WALT: Find change from 100; use column addition
to add several amounts

Quick Warm Up

Difference between two times

Please write your answers on a whiteboard!

15.01.17
WALT: Find change from 100; use column addition
to add several amounts

Take a few suggestions,

Explain how you estimated

the total cost (e.g.
rounding to the nearest
pound).

Model using column

addition to find the exact
cost, and then find the
change from the 100
budget.

Task: find as many

different combinations of
three activities as you can.
Which total is closest to

16.01.17
WALT: Solve multi-step word problems; Use brackets
to record the necessary calculations

78 100 42

78 (100 42)

What is the difference

between these two
calculations?

There are 78 sheets of stamps. Each

had 100 stamps but 42 on each sheet
have been sold. How many are left?
There are 78 sheets of 100 stamps. In
all, 42 have been sold. How many are
left?
Which of these statements/questions
go with each of the calculations on
the left? Can you explain why?

16.01.17
WALT: Solve multi-step word problems; Use brackets
to record the necessary calculations

Have a go at this one then

Magda orders 3 books.

Each costs 3.95 and

the postage and packing for each book is 1.95.

What is the total cost?

Re-write this as a mathematical calculation remembering to use

brackets where appropriate

WALT: Solve multi-step word problems; Use brackets
to record the necessary calculations

Have a go at this one then

Derek loads 12 crates of Coke onto his truck.

Each crate holds 20 cans

However, Derek drinks 13 cans during his journey.

How many cans does Derek have remaining?

Re-write this as a mathematical calculation remembering to use

brackets where appropriate
