There are two main levels of English usage:


STANDARD and NONSTANDARD. Standard
English is the preferred method of speaking and
writing for the majority of educated people. It
includes the most widely accepted uses of
grammar , vocabulary, spoken language used by
certain social, regional, or ethnic groups. It

Each of the levels can communicate well for
those people who are accustomed to using it.
In this chapter you will learn to identify the
factors, such as time, place, and occasions,
that determine which level of usage is
appropriate.

Standard English
- can be either formal or informal. Both are
considered acceptable, but there is a marked
difference between the style and tone of each.
Consider the diff. between inviting a respected but
unfamiliar person into your home with
Will you please come in? and shouting Come on
in to a close friend.

Formal English
-is the kind of language considered
appropriate for any serious writing or speaking. It
need not be pompous difficult or excessively
complicated.
-uses traditional standards of correctness.it is
characterized by complex sentence structures
and an extensive vocabulary
