Introduction:
Carbon nanotubes(CNTs) are allotropes of carbon with
a cylindrical nanostructure.
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) possess extremely high
stiffness,strength and resilience.
Properties of CNT can be evaluated using a representative
volume element (RVE)
RVE is based on the continuum mechanics
Fig 1.graphene sheets rolled into tubes
A 3-D FEM model for the square RVE with a long
CNT (CNT thickness=0.4 nm, with one layer of elements)
Study of CNT based composites is done on two levels:-

1. molecular dynamics (MD) (for smaller scales)

2. continuum mechanics approach (for larger scales)

case using FEM. CNT . Addition of
CNT to matrix at volume fraction of 3.6%.

4. Unnati A Joshi et al. This paper deals with approaches

structured materials,here a
previously developed graphene
sheet is bent to get CNT,and then
is characterised to get its study
properties
Objective

Finite element analysis of square RVE of carbon nano

tubes
Mathematical validation of mechanical properties like
elaticity modulus of carbon nano tubes using
experimental data.

= 0.4nm ; volume fraction = 3.62% for long and
1.62% for short

matrix length=100nm ; poison's ratio= 0.3

With volume fraction as low as 3.6% we got 33% rise in

BOUNDARY ELEMENT METHOD :
BEM is applied successfully for the analysis of various materials
BEM is superior method for stress analysis if we have to consider
interfaces like CNT and matrix interface
BEM method becomes more important because most failures occur
at the interface
boudary integral equation

T ( P, P )[u ( P) u ( p )]dS ( P) U
s
ij 0 j j 0
s
ij ( P, P0 )t j ( P)dS ( P )
ui,t=displacement and traction fields
can be applied for 3-D elastostatic components
Hardships of BEM:

Major problem in applying

BEM method is to find the
nearly singular integral
correctly
i.e. when source point (P)
is very close still off the
surface of integration
for this line integral
approach will be used
Rules of mixture:
Formula for elasticity
Ez=EtVt + Em(1 - Vt)
