Application of Hahn Banach Theorem
Application of Hahn Banach Theorem

HahnBanach Theorem
Used to deal the results where extension of linear
functionals from subspaces to whole spaces is
involved.
Two important questions:
Can we extend linear functional? Suppose X is a
normed space over F = R or C, and Z X is a
subspace. If we have a linear functional f : Z F, is
it guaranteed that there is some linear functional f
on the whole space X that agrees with f on the
subspace Z?
Can we prescribe values of linear functional? Given
a non-zero element x X in a normed space, is
there always a bounded linear functional f : X F
Sublinear functional
A sublinear functional is a real-valued
function p on a vector space X which
satisfies
p(x + y) p(x) + p(y) for all x; y X;
(subadditivity)
p(a x) = a p(x) for all a 0; x X: (positive
homogeneity)

Hence if x0 is such that f(x0) = 0 for all f 2 X0,
then x0 = 0.
