Air-Conditioning

What is Air Conditioning?

 Maintaining the air at the desired

temperature.
 Control moisture content of the air.
 Hold contamination to an acceptable
level.
 Circulate the air properly
How Air-conditioning is achieved?
 Refrigeration
system allow transfer of
heat from the cooling space to a
location where heat can be easily
discarded.

 Transfer of heat is facilitated by

change of state as refrigerant needs
latent heat to change state from liquid
to gas at its boiling point.
How Air-conditioning is achieved?

 Ex.
Of Refrigerants- Ammonia, Freon
-12, Freon-22
Working Principle &Components
of Air-conditioning System

Evaporator

Expansion
Compressor
valve

Condenser
► Heat is absorbed by the refrigerant at
a low temp. in the evaporator thereby
cooling the surrounding space, and is
discharged at a high temp. level into
atmosphere in condenser, thereby
heating the space around

1 TR is amount of heat required to

melt one ton of ice in 24 Hrs (12000
BTU/Hr)
Type of air-conditioning System

1) Window Type A/C Units

2) Split Type A/C Units
3) Package Type A/C units
4) Central A/C plant
WINDOW /SPLIT AIR CONDITIONERS
 Mounted on window &
no floor space
No fresh air &
humidity control
Weak air throw
Not suitable for
continuous operation
(only for comfort air-
conditioning)
SPLIT TYPE AIR CONDITIONERS

Outdoor unit comprises

condenser & compressor
Opening in wall/ window
not required
Less noise
Distance between indoor
& outdoor unit should be
less than 30 ft
PACKAGE TYPE A/C UNITS

 Ease of installation and

removal.
 Factory assembled and
tested equipment.
 More control possible
 Suitable for continuous
operation
CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING PLANT

 For large areas to be Air-conditioned

and package A/C will be costly
proposition.
 More controls & higher flexibility.
 Better movement of air.
Factors affecting AC Load
► Orientation and Location Of Building.
► Construction Materials Used.
► Number and types Of Window And Doors.
► Utility Of The Space.
► Physical Dimensions Of Space.
► Lighting.
► Occupancy.
► Appliances And Equipments.
Preventive
Maintenance of
Window /Split AC
Window /Split AC-Daily Checks

 Check for room temperature.
 Check for any abnormal
sound/vibration.
Window /Split AC-Monthly
Checks
Clean cooling & condenser coil
periodically and comb mashed fins
 Checkfilters and clean or change if
required
 Ensure proper charging of refrigerant
 Check for tripping of compressor by
thermostat
Window /Split AC-Yearly Checks

 Complete Servicing and testing of Window /

split AC unit.
Preventive
Maintenance of AC
System
Preventive Maintenance of AC System
( Package & Central)-Daily Checks
 Check for any vibration in AC unit
equipments
 Check for discharge & suction
pressure
 Check V-Belt tension of Blower Motor/
condenser motor.
 Check for any frosting at coil
 Check working of fresh air fan.
Preventive Maintenance of AC
System-Monthly Checks

 Micro –filter Cleaning.

 Fresh Air Filter cleaning.
 Check for leakage of conditioned air
 Check lubrication of all bearings
Preventive Maintenance of AC
System-Yearly Checks

 Complete Servicing of A/C plant

before onset of summer
 Replace the fine filters-every two
years
