COMMUTATIVE LAWS
The "Commutative Laws" say we canswap numbersover and still
get the same answer ...
... when weadd:
a + b=b + a
... or when wemultiply:
a b=b a
ASSOCIATIVE LAWS
The "Associative Laws" say that it doesn't matter how we group the numbers
(i.e. which we calculate first) ...
... when weadd:
(a + b) + c=a + (b + c)
.. or when wemultiply:
(a b) c=a (b c)
Examples:
This: (2 + 4)+ 5= 6+ 5= 11
Or to rearrange a little:
What is 2 16 5?
2 16 5
= (2 5) 16
= 10 16 = 160
DISTRIBUTIVE LAW
a (b + c) = a b + a c
222555
= (2 5) (2 5) (2 5)
= 10 10 10
= 1000
2 17 5
= 10 17
=170
17 4
= (17 2) 2
= 34 2
= 68
7 101
= 7 (100 + 1)
= 700 + 7 = 707
7 99
= 7 (100 1)
= 700 7
= 693
7 102
= 7 (100 + 2)
= 700 + 14
= 714
