Thevenins Theorem

Dtel 115
Definition
Thevenins Theorem states that
Any linear circuit containing several voltages and
resistances can be replaced by just one single voltage in
series with a single resistance connected across the
load
Key Terms
Any circuit
No matter how complex
Can be simplified
To an equivalent circuit
Consisting of voltage source
Series resistor
Equivalent circuit
Equivalent Circuit components
RTH is the resistance of the source looking back into the
circuit
VTH is the open circuit voltage at the terminals.
RL is the identified load resistor
Procedure of Using Thevennins
Theorem
1. Identify the subject resistor
2. Remove it from the circuit
3. Find RTH
i. Open circuit current sources
ii. Short circuit voltage sources
iii. Find circuit resistance with ref to load resistor position
4. Find VTH
i. Replace power sources back
ii. Use circuit analysis to find V TH
5. Find the current flowing in the load resistor IL = V TH/(RTH+RL)
Example 1
Determine current ,voltage and power in 8 ohm resistor
0.909A
Example 2

Find current Voltage and power in the 2 Ohm resistor

=6.75A
Example 3
RL = 5 Ohm calculate current Voltage and power in it
