ORIGIN & HISTORY OF SARI
Word 'sari' evolved from the word 'sattika' mentioned in Jain & Buddhist literature.
History of Indian clothing trace the sari back to the Indus Valley Civilization (2800-
1800 BCE
Earliest known depiction of the sari is the statue of an Indus valley priest wearing a
drape.

Its believed until the 14th century, dhoti was worn by men, and women used
to wear a breast band and a veil or wrap that could be used to cover the
upper body or head. No one wore blouses.

Dravidian Family
These saris were found in Tamil Nadu.
They were draped with one piece of cloth &
women of each region adapted the drape to
keep their legs covered
Dhoti Family
The most ancient recorded Indian drape is the dhoti.

are found on women of all castes
living in what was historically the
Nivi Family Gond kingdom.
The Nivi family of saris is most widespread.
Forms of the Nivi sari are worn all over India, as well
as in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, and Indian
