What is a bearing failure

What cause a bearing failure
How to identify bearing failure

Bearing Failure

Bearing failure

Bearing-related problems are one of the main causes of the turbine generator outage

Bearings are used to prevent friction during relative movement.

Bearing Failure

Causes of bearing failure

Excessive bearing load

The force pressing the shaft against the bearing wall, which leads to bearing
overheating.

02/16/17 4
Bearing Failure

Electric Discharge.

A conductor path is created between two points of different potential.

Bearing Failure

Improper Lubrication

Inadequate flow/in-sufficient lubrication:- which can result in bearing overheating

Dirty oil:-corrosion by oil contaminants or scoring of the bearing surface and mating shaft
surface

Improper oil temperature:- can also cause high rotor vibration which can damage the
bearing on its own

Bearing Failure

High Vibrations

Very high vibration can disrupt the oil film, and the resultant metal-to-metal contact can
quickly wipe the bearing surface

Bearing Failure

Bearing failures can be identified by:

by

Change in 1X vibration and phase.

Loaded bearing indicated by a flattened orbit.

Shaft centerline position will change.

The front and rear bearing metal temperature will change because of load / shaft position
change on bearing.
