Definition of Grounded Theory

the discovery of theory from data

systematically
(Glaser and Strauss 1967: 2).
Aim of Grounded Theory

to generate or discover a theory

(Glaser and Strauss, 1967)
Development of Grounded
Theory

Two sociologist, Barney G. Glaser and Anselm

L. Strauss, developed grounded theory in the
late 1960s.

Glaser and Strauss developed a pioneering book

that expanded in detail on their grounded theory
procedure , The Discovery of Grounded
Theory (1967).
Disadvantages of
Grounded Theory

large amounts of data often difficult to

manage.

The subjectivity of the data leads to

difficulties in establishing reliability and
validity of approaches and information.
It is difficult to prevent researcher-induced
bias.

The presentation of results -the highly

qualitative nature of the results can make
them difficult to present.
Advantages of
Grounded Theory

Use the systemic procedures for generating

a theory.

It Avoids Making Assumptions

Develop an understanding of social
phenomena that is not pre-formed .

Open Coding

Open coding is the part of the analysis

concerned with identifying, naming,
categorizing and describing
phenomena found in the text.
Essentially, each line, sentence,
paragraph
etc. is read in search of the answer to
the
repeated question "what is this about?
What is being referenced here?"
Axial Coding

Axial coding consists of identifying

relationships among the open codes.
What
are the connections among the codes?
Selective Coding

It is the process of choosing

one category to be the core category,
and
relating all other categories to that
category.
