1960S CIVIL RIGHTS

MOVEMENT
By: Faheema, Srinitya and Sanya
ABOUT 1960S CIVIL RIGHTS
MOVEMENT
Throughout the 1960s, citizens in Southern America protested for equal
rights given to them. They protested about unfair & discriminating laws
and to promote equal rights. In 1954, United States supreme courts
struck down segregation in public schools. Large segments of the
populace, especially African Americans without property werent treated
inappropriately and werent given citizenship rights in the American
republic. They werent treated like all the other citizens in America and
protested several groups in order to get granted civil rights in America.
During the process of the protest, many things changed:
In 1963, the Federal Court ordered the desegregation of schools in
Alabama. There was also an incident where four African American girls
got bombed in a church in Birmingham, Alabama.
In May1963, 400 civil rights demonstrators were arrested in Birmingham,
Alabama. Brutal police actions were against the demonstrators.
In 1956, the Federal Court ruling ended segregated transport.
After all the struggle the blacks went through, the Civil Rights Act passed
in 1968 although Martin Luther King Jr died. He was the leader of the Civil
Rights Movement.
HOW IS IT RELATED TO THE BOOK?
To Kill A Mockingbird was published during the time of the civil rights
movement and throughout the book, the protagonist and her father
experience life through others shoes. The scouts father is given the job to
defend a dark skinned man that is accused for something he didnt do. Civil
Rights is related to this book because Tom is dark skinned and is given false
accusations and disrespect, just like African Americans did during the Civil
Rights movement. African Americans during the 1960s toiled for racial
equality and even though they were given some rights, there was still some
controversy, even after Martin Luther King Jrs assassination.
