Types of Windows
Double-hung windows:
Two sashes guided by a metal or wooden track.
Single-hung windows: upper sash is fixed.

Fixed (or stationary) windows:


least expensive. Admit the most light.
Variety of shapes and sizes.
Cannot be opened for ventilation.

Casement windows:
hinged at the side and swing outward
Recommended for maximum ventilation.

Awning windows
swing outward like casement windows, but are hinged at the top.
can be left open even when its raining.

Sliding windows
essentially double-hungs turned on their side.
often used when there is a need for a window that is wider than it is tall.

1. Head The main horizontal member

2. Jamb The main vertical members


forming the sides of a window or door
frame.

3. Frame The enclosure in which window


sash or door panels are mounted.

4. Glazing Glass in a window or door;


the act or process of fitting with glass.

6. Sash A single assembly of stiles


and rails made into a frame for
holding glass.

7. Sill The main horizontal member


forming the bottom of the frame of a
window or door.

8. Muntin Bar Any small bar that


divides a windows glass. Also called
a grille or windowpane divider.

Low Emissivity Windows.

to reduce the heat loss or
gain.
Argon Windows: fill the
space between the panes of
glass to reduce the heat
loss.
