Non-Mendelian

Genetics
Incomplete Dominance and
Codominance
Non- Mendelian Genetics
Not all genes show a simple dominant vs recessive pattern
in their alleles. This observation led to the discovery of
Incomplete dominance and Codominance.

Traits that exhibit incomplete dominance or codominance

produce a new phenotype in heterozygous individuals
(instead of simply showing the dominant phenotype).
Incomplete Dominance
The heterozygous individual has a phenotype
that is a blending of the dominant and
recessive versions of the trait.

Example: Red Flower (RR) crossed with White

Flower (WW) will result in pink flowers (RW)

Genotypic Ratio: 0 RR : 4 RW : 0 WW

Phenotypic Ratio: 0 Red : 4 Pink : 0 White

Now you try...
Pink flower (RR) X Pink flower (RR)

R R
Genotypic Ratio:
1 RR : 2 RR : 1 RR R RR RR
Phenotypic Ratio:
1 Red : 2 Pink : 1 White
R RR RR
Codominance
Both traits are expressed when the genotype
is heterozygous

Example: Red Cow (RR) crossed with White

Cow (WW) gives you a Roan (RW) cow

Genotypic Ratio: 0 RR : 4 RW : 0 WW

Phenotypic Ratio: 0 Red : 4 Roan : 0 White

Now you try...
Black Chicken (BB) X Checkered Chicken (BW)
B B

Genotypic Ratio: B
2 BB : 2 BW : 0 WW BB BB
Phenotypic Ratio:
2 Black : 2 checkered : 0 White W BW BW
