Theory
Carol Vernallis is known for her theory based on
music editing. Her theory is based around 4
concepts that relate to the way a music video is
produced. The 4 concepts include: Narrative,
Editing, Camerawork/Framing and Diegesis.
Narrative
Vernallis suggested that the video is a visual response
to the music video. Whatever visually happens in the
music video reflects the lyrics of the song. However
the video may be partially narrative and may seem
disconnected from the song. If the narrative is not
completed it may leave the audience questioning,
although the music video may have a narrative style
it may have a mixture between performance and
narrative.
Editing
Vernallis states that the video may break the
conventions of continuity editing. The editing
may be visible and brought to the audiences
attention unlike the invisible style of continuity
editing suggesting that the video will have
distinctive editing techniques throughout the
music video. For example, cuts to the beat, jump
cuts and graphic matches.
Camerawork/Framing
Carol Vernallis states that camera shots such as
establishing, mid shots and close ups are key shots
and are used frequently throughout because they
establish the artist. There are various other shots that
are essential and common in most music videos
despite the genre because their primary purpose is to
promote the artist.

Also in terms of framing she stated that the artists

should be mainly placed at the front and in the center
of the frame to draw the audiences attention.
Diegesis
Diegesis is setting, plot/narrative. Vernallis explains
how the diegesis will be revealed slowly to create
anticipation and maintain the audiences focus. The
actions in the video are not always completed and
may be disrupted in some way. Repetition is also
inevitable throughout the music video as some
frames will appear more important than other due to
the way they have been shot.
