    Serbia is a leading producer of prunes, with an estimated production of 9,000 tonnes in 2016. Prune production has a long history in Serbia dating back to at least the Bronze Age. In the 19th century, Serbia experienced a "golden age" of prune production, exporting over 40,000 tonnes annually. Today, prune production is centered on the Stanley variety, with only 3,200 hectares of orchards used for drying prunes commercially. The National Association of Serbian Prunes Producers represents major producers accounting for around 70% of exports, which were an estimated 11,800 tonnes in 2016 destined mainly for EU countries.
