AQUAFAN+ INTRODUCTION

Hydro-Powered Cooling Tower Technology with Back-

Up Motor
AQUAFAN+
Turbine Powered Cooling Tower with Backup Motor
Principals

AQUAFAN+ is equipped with turbine that converts

residual water pressure into fan rotation
Backup motor delivers extra power when the cooling
demand requires additional performance.
Key data

Cell modules of 3.6 meter with 2.4 meter fans

Rotation generated by turbine up to 200-250 RPM
( t-RPM [turbine RPM] depending on water pressure available)
Total rotation required up to 400 RPM
Typical total fan shaft power required up to 7.5 kW
Mechanics

Motor controlled by VFD

VFD keeps motor free running in t-RPM range (negligible
electricity consumption)
Above t-RPM motor adds fan speed:
VFD controlled via PT100 on return water and in relation cooling
demand (option 1)
VFD controlled via RPM meter (option 2)
Motor runs fan at full RPM (energy saving realized as part of
shaft power delivered from turbine)
Development Project

Topic in discussion with VFD supplier (China) and Motor

Supplier (Germany)

Scope of supply VFD supplier:

VFD + programming
RPM meter / PT100

WATCO supply:
Cooling tower
Turbine
Motor
How on Versace

We select motors that can handle full power and fit into
the structure of turbine + water distribution system
No need VFD programming as motors will always run at
max RPM
Decide with DCPro: pump action to the tower to
establish nozzle configuration
Advantages

Keep AQUAFAN concept alive in DXB

Applicable Versace
No need thermal validation before go to market
Allows AQUAFAN selection in critical applications with
low approaches
Can be submitted for CTI certification
Testing to be done
Turbine Efficiency Validation
Equip AQUAFAN at our site with motor
Run following tests:
1. Full speed fan on turbine (base line)
2. Full speed fan on turbine + motor
3. Full speed fan on motor

kW(3) kW(2) = kW from turbine

kW turbine / kW water = Turbine Efficiency
Thermal testing

Thermal testing not required for performance guarantee

(only for indicative purposes)
Power Saving

Assumptions:
safe system design leaves up to 0.5b residue pressure
200 m3 water over 12 cell
Water energy 2.7 kW
Turbine efficiency = 50% 1.35 kW turbine contribution to
system
On total requirement of 6.5 kW 20% energy saving
