BOILERS
A steam boiler is a closed
vessel in which water is
heated, vaporized and
converted to Steam at desired
temperature and pressure by
adding heat energy to it.

Heat Energy required for

generating steam is obtained
by burning fuel in furnace

Common fuel used are coal, coke, oil,

wood, sawdust, etc. 4
Applications
Power generation as in the case of a
external combustion engines, steam
engines and steam turbines.
Steam Power Plant.
Kitchens working with steam

5
Requirement of a good boiler

Maximum steam generation with

minimum fuel consumption
Initial cost, maintenance cost and
running cost must be low
Must be safe in working
Must occupy less space
Must be capable of quick starting
Should able to meet load variation
6
Classification of boiler
1. Use and application
2. Axis of shell
3. Relative Position of Water and Hot
Gases
4. Method of water circulation
5. Working Pressure
6. Location of the furnace

7
1. Use and
Application

a) Stationary Boilers
If the boilers are used at
one place only, they are
called stationary boilers.
Example: - Simple vertical
boiler, Cochran boiler

b) Mobile Boilers
If the boilers are portable,
they are called mobile
boilers.
Example: - Locomotive 8
