PEFR
Consists of using a portable, handheld peak flow
meter to evaluate a subjects peak flow
capabilities
PEFR
Often used for asthma monitoring and
bronchodilator mgt
done by performing a maximal inspiration
followed by a short, maximal forceful expiration
for 1-2 secs. through the device
It should measure with +/- 10% accuracy or
within +/- 20 l/min of the actual flow rate
Adult PEFR- 100l/min- 850l/min
The device must have flow resistance of no more
than 2.5 cmH2O/l/sec with flows up to 14l/sec
Proper instruction and coaching is important to
the success of testing
A minimum of 3 test measurements must be
performed
The largest PEFR value is reported
The measured value should be corrected to BTPS
Advantages
Small and relatively inexpensive.
Clinically significant worsening of small airway
obstruction can cause reductions in PEFRs
Subjects can be easily taught to use PEFR
monitoring devices for self-performed routine
testing
Routine PEFR monitoring at the bedside can be
a means for bronchodilator response evaluation
Daily monitoring for asthma pts can detect devt
of increases in small airway obstruction
