An equivalent system is
x+3y+2z=6 Back x = 6-3y-2z = 6-3-2z
y=1 Substitute = 3-2z

All solutions are given by

x = 3-
z is called a free variable. It can take any value and we
2z
can obtain all possible solutions by assigning different
y =1 values to z. Any symbol can be used instead of z. E.g.
we can put z=t and write the solution as

x 3-
2t
y =
1 This can also be written as
z
t

3
x 3 -2t
y = 1 + 0
z 0 t

3 -2t 3 -2
= 1 + 0 = 1 + t 0
0 t 0 1

This system has an infinite number of solutions.

The last line implies 0x+0y+0z = 5 which is
~ 0 -1 -2 -3
clearly impossible.
0 0 0 5
This system is inconsistent. i.e. It has no
solutions.

Substitutey=-4+3z=-4+3=-1
z= 1
z=1

x 1
y = -1 This system has an unique
z 1 solution.

This method, called Gaussian Elimination, can be used for

systems of any size.
