Types of Music Videos

Lemuel Lewin
Narrative based videos
Narrative videos mainly consist of a story line relating to the lyrics and
genre of the song. This is a good style to use for engaging the audience
rather than the other styles. This is because rather than just the
audience. Narrative type music videos are often used for songs that
feature in films, with scenes from the film cut into the video.
Performance based videos
Performance based videos feature the band/artist performing either to the
camera or an audience. this is a popular technique rock bands use as there
concerts are usually high energy and there is more interest for a viewer to watch
the band perform as a whole rather than an artist on their own. Usually only
some genres such as Rock,R&B and hip hop use performance type music videos
in order to entertain the audience. For example in music videos such as Chris
browns Party the video features a lot of choreography this is to grasp the
audiences attention and to perhaps follow the movements of the artist in the
video.
Concept based videos
Concept style music videos are based around a single idea or concept and are
usually unusual or obscure, even surreal for an audience. The unusual content is an
attraction to the audience, which draws them in. A successful concept video will
keep the audience entertained and constantly looking at what or who is on the
screen. There are lots of common themes in music videos depending on the genre of
music E.g. Heavy Metal bands go for performance dominated clips, Rap has lots of
street images, Dance routines are common in pop videos. Other examples of
concept based videos are parodies. Parody music videos involve copying or changing
well known music ideas and lyrics. Their purpose is to make humour of the original
video.
