4 STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

Structural analysis is the prediction of performance of a given structure under prescribed

loads / other external effects.
Methods of analysis :-
Moment distribution method
Slope deflection method
Method of joints
Method of sections
5 STRUCTURAL IDEALIZATION

Simplify and develop an idealize model of the actual Structure

An idealized model consists of identification of Well known individual structural elements

Real Structure
Physical model
Mathematical model
6 REAL STRUCTURE

An idealized model consists of identification of well known individual structural elements.

Use elaborate loading equipment and measuring instruments like Strain gauges, Linear
Variable Displacement Transducers, Load cells.

Very Expensive and time consuming & used in exceptional cases only.
7 PHYSICAL MODEL

It is used in very important or complex structures.

May be analyzed through the use of physical models.

Made up of plastic, Metal or other suitable material.

Laboratory testing of a small scale building frame, Shake table test of a bridge model,
Photo-elastic Testing of a dam model, wind tunnel testing of small Scale models of high-
rise buildings, Towers or chimney.
8 MATHEMATICAL MODEL

It consists of mathematical equations, which describe the structure and loads, and are
solved by suitable Algorithm.

This technique requires a high speed electronic computer.

9 CONVENTIONAL DESIGN METHODS

Conventional methods of design :-

Limit state method of design
Working stress method of design

ABOUT STAAD.Pro V8i
3D Structural Analysis And Design software
STAAD.Pro V8i (Superstructure Design)
STAAD Foundation V8i (Sub Structure Design)

Developed by Research Engineers International at Yorba Linda, in year 1997.

Research Engineers International was bought by Bentley Systems in 2005.

Commercial version STAAD.Pro is used for analysis and design of concrete, steel, timber, aluminium
11
ADVANTAGES OF STAAD.Pro V8i
Ensure on time and on budget completion of project

Less complexity

Flexible modeling environment

Different country codes are available (80 international codes)

Can be linked to other softwares like AUTOCAD, MS Word,

90% accuracy as in manual calculation

Lower total cost of ownership

Increase design productivity

APPLICATIONS
12
Used by structural engineers, engineering consultants and firms
Construction companies, owner/operators & government agencies
Offshore platform designers
Building and Real-estate industry:-
Commercial buildings
Bridges and highway structures
Industrial structures
Chemical plant structures
Dams
Turbine foundations
Culverts
13 STRUCTURE & ITS TYPES

Structure can be defined an assemblage of structural elements such as beams, columns, slabs
proportioned to resist loads.
Types of structures :-
Space
Plane
Truss
Floor
14 SPACE / FRAME

3 Dimensional framed structure with

loads applied in any plane
It is the most general form
15 PLANE

Structure bound by a global XY co-

ordinate system
Loads applied in the same plane
16 TRUSS

Structure consisting of truss members

Only axial member forces
No bending in the members
17 FLOOR

2 or 3 Dimensional structure having no

horizontal (global X or Z) movement of
the structure
Fx, Fz & My are restrained at every joint
Eg:- floor framing (in global X-Z plane)
of a building
