QUALITY CAPABILITY

OFTEN CALLED PROCESS OR MACHINE CAPABILITY

Quality capability is often called process or
machine capability. It may be defined as the
minimum spread of specific measurement
variation which will include 99.70% of the
measurement from the given process, in other
words, 6 SD (Standard Deviation). Through
quality capability analysis, the capability of a
process or machine to achieve a prescribed
quality could be determined.

PURPOSE OF QUALITY CAPABILITY ANALYSIS

The purpose of quality capability analysis is to

determine the natural variation of a process. Thus,
we can determine whether or not a machine or
process is capable of achieving the prescribed
quality. Furthermore, a job could be quality
scheduled knowing the quality capability of the
process or machine.

PROCEDURE IN QUALITY CAPABILITY ANALYSIS

1. External factors or conditions should be noted and

accounted for such as: unnatural material variations,
process adjustments and process deterioration
2. gather data or conduct a dry-run. (At least 50
observations but preferably 100 or more observations).
3. Compute the standard deviation of the data.
4. Compute for quality capability, QC
QC = 6 SD
where: SD = standard deviation
5. Consider the rule of thumb QC of total tolerance

NOTE:

As a rule of thumb, the quality capability total

tolerance specified, for a process or machine to be
considered capable. When a process or machine have
been shown to be incapable of producing the great
majority of units within specification requirements, there
are four alternatives which maybe taken, namely:
1. use a different process or different machine
2. change specification requirement
3. screen (100% inspection) for removal of defective unit/s
4 leave alone
