CHILD LABOUR

BY: HIREN GUPTA

VIII C
INTRODUCTION
Child labourrefers to the employment of
children in any work that deprives children of
their childhood, interferes with their ability to
attend regular school, and that is mentally,
physically, socially or morally dangerous and
harmful .
This practice is considered exploitative by
manyinternational organizations. Legislation
across the world prohibit child labour.
PAST ACCIDENTS
A lack of safety norms and lax inspection has
seen over 237 children lose their lives in
accidents at the factories in Sivakasi.(2003)
In 2011, a total of 14 children lost their lives in
incidents in Titucorin and Sivakasi at
Virudhnagar district of Tamil Nadu, region
notorious for rampant child labour and for
claiming the lives of scores of children at the
various firecracker manufacturing units situated
there . In 2012, 38 children lost their lives at a
factory in Mudalipatty.
GOVERNMENT
INITIATIVES
In 1979, First statutory committee to analyze
and research on the issue of child labour in
India - the Gurupadswamy Committee was
formed.
In 1986,Child Labour (Prohibition and &
Regulation) Act was passed
In May of 2015, a major amendment which
stipulated that children between 5-14 years are
not to be employed in any occupation (except
in the entertainment industry) was accepted.
CURRENT SITUATION
The various steps taken in this direction and the
laws passed about it havent controlled the ongoing
child labour. This is possible only with the co-
operation of all sections of the society and the law
enforcement agencies and by removing or
minimizing the causes of child labour.
The main thrust should be on controlling the
population of the country, education of the children
and providing sufficient funds for its removal from
the gross domestic product of India. However , there
has been a recent drop in the number of child
labourers since 2013.
SOLUTIONS
The Govt. should take proper effective steps to decrease the
population and give the employment to the parents of child
labour.
Necessary practical steps should be taken to educate the
children.
There should be effective implementations of child
protective laws.
There should be necessary prosecution of child labour
defaulters.
The involvement of the religious leaders, trade unionist and
non government organizations and
to tackle the child labour by forming advisory committees on
child labour on block level should be there.
