House Bill II
House Bill II was past during March 23, 2016 in
response to a local ordinance by Charlotte officials to
protect transgender individuals from discrimination.
HB2, among other things, prevents local governments
like Charlotte from passing local ordinances, preventing
discrimination.
Also known as the Bathroom Bill, this bill was
passed with little public consent and has cost
millions of dollars.
Many feel this bill imposes on the civil rights of
individuals, especially in the LBGTQ community.
Failed Repeal
At the end of last year the Governor Elect at the
time, Roy Cooper, pushed for Senate Republicans
to repeal HB2.
Unfortunately this was a failed attempt at
compromise. Cooper convinced Charlotte officials
to repeal the ordinance if Senate republicans
agreed to repeal HB2
However, senate republicans refused to
compromise, leaving those in Charlotte
unprotected from discriminatory laws and the rest
of the state still under anti-transgender legislation.
Roy Cooper
NC Governor
Whowon the 2016-2017 elected
governor position mainly due to his
views of the House Bill 2.
Letter
I wrote a letter to Governor Roy Cooper to advocate
for those that were oppressed due to the house bill 2.
Although he is for the repeal, he is the governor of
NC and can continue to fight for a change.
In the letter I expressed to him my future role as a
social worker and how him and I holding these
positions allows us to be the voice for those who are
effected by this bill.
The letter also explained the consequences NC has
faced due to the passing of HB2.
I have yet to hear from Governor Roy Cooper.
