Something had been happening for a period
of time before something else happened.

Ex: Our game of tennis was interrupted.


Wed been playing for about half an hour
when it started to rain.

Ex: I had been doing my homework

she arrived.
The action was ongoing and is often
used
with for, since, all day, all night.
